Principal, Mike Roddick and staff welcome you to Maplewood Elementary. Maplewood serves Kindergarten through third grade in a student friendly, academic rich environment by developing strong relationships with students and the families through the Responsive Classroom Approach to education.
The primary goal of the Responsive Classroom approach is to help educators build safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms and schools by strengthening their abilities to:
• Know children individually, developmentally, and culturally, and apply this knowledge to their teaching
• Build a climate of trust and respect where it is safe to take risks and make mistakes
• Facilitate healthy and caring relationships among students
• Use classroom management approaches that help children acquire autonomy and self-discipline
• Structure the school day to promote learning through social interaction and collaboration
• Infuse the curriculum with opportunities for academic choices, active learning, and reflection
• Help students acquire and practice the skills of cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control
• Develop positive relationships with students' families and encourage their involvement in school
• Develop supportive working relationships among the adults in school.
